Baton Rouge, LA
I make stickers, greeting cards and art prints inspired by the flora, fauna, and culture of my home state, Louisiana. My work is a combination of traditional media and digital art- which produces a very original result. I like to make work that is rooted in my interests, but also appeals to all kinds of people. I’d describe my style as folksy, bright, and full of lively energy!
Part time/Side Hustle. I’m a full time graphic designer.
(This is a hard question!!!) Colorful, eye-catching, Louisiana-lifestyle, reminiscent of home, modern, Cajun
I wake up, press the snooze button and immediately regret (but not really) staying up till the wee hours of the night reading a good book. I then fix myself a hot cup of coffee (the first of many) and step into my at-home office to work for the day, wearing my Pj’s, slippers, and Comfy- the official uniform of work-from-homer-s. I work, break for a power lunch (usually with my mom) and then work some more. I’m visited periodically throughout the day by my bff/co-worker named Buddy, my standard poodle. After work-work, I do my side hustle work, which can include packaging orders, printing shipping labels, and taking pics for my website and social. Then finally, around 8pm or so I like to sit on the couch, turn on Law and Order SVU and draw on my iPad.
2020 Pantone Color of the Year: Classic Blue
Reading a book and drinking a beer in my hammock at the camp, its really deep in the swamp, you can’t even get there by car- you have to take a boat. Its the most peaceful and beautiful place I can think of.
I would love to design for a brand like Anthropologie and have my artwork on their cute little mugs and tea towels and other textiles.
YouTube! I use YouTube so much to find tutorials on photoshop, procreate, or illustration techniques. I’m pretty sure 90% of my graphic design knowledge comes from the kind/all-knowing teachers of YouTube, and not my higher education. I also taught myself how to embroider and how to do dip pen calligraphy from YouTube- I’m convinced you can use it to teach yourself anything!
Living in Louisiana has a great effect on my work. Besides art, my other great passion in life is animals, and when I started out, I first drew (and continue to draw) inspiration from animals native to Louisiana. I love how wildlife and agriculture is so ingrained in our culture here, and have always been such fundamental pieces in defining the Louisiana lifestyle. I started off with illustrating the seafood we all know and love, like shrimp, crabs, and crawfish; but also some of the more classic bayou creatures, like gators, spoonbills, and nutrias. I found each of these animals to have such charismatic narratives and unique personalities about them that I just can't seem to draw something without including them.
Making work that I love, and meeting people at markets! I never thought I’d say that, because I’m naturally very introverted person, but patrons and fellow makers bring a magnetic and fun energy to markets that make them the best.
Everything that involves numbers of any kind- but mainly the money part of the biz. I can’t do math. Like at all. I’m grateful to have a boyfriend who is very good at it, because if not I’d be in a pickle.
My website, or at Midcity Makers Market when life gets back to normal.
